Overview

About fall protection

Working at height is a high-risk activity that requires robust fall protection systems. These systems are generally divided into fall restraint, which prevents the worker from reaching a fall hazard, and fall arrest, which safely stops a falling worker before they hit the ground or an obstacle.

A complete fall protection system consists of the "ABC" components: Anchor (the secure point of attachment), Body wear (the full-body harness), and Connector (the lanyard or lifeline linking the two). Each component must be correctly rated and inspected regularly to ensure integrity under load.

The fall protection we supply

Each line below explains what it is, where it is used, and what to include in your enquiry so we can quote accurately.

01
Safety Harnesses

Full-Body Safety Harnesses

The primary component for distributing fall forces across the body. They feature multiple D-rings for different attachment points and adjustable straps for a secure fit.

Typical applications

  • Construction
  • Tower maintenance
  • Roof work
  • Scaffolding

What to specify

  • Attachment points: Dorsal, Chest, Side
  • Webbing material
  • Buckle type: Pass-through or Quick-connect
  • Weight capacity
  • Padding for comfort

Buying noteConsider the duration of use; padded harnesses are better for workers spending long periods at height.

02
Lanyards

Fall Arrest and Restraint Lanyards

Connectors between the harness and the anchor. Fall arrest lanyards include an energy absorber to reduce the force transmitted to the body during a fall.

Typical applications

  • General height work
  • Elevated work platforms
  • Scaffolding
  • Maintenance

What to specify

  • Length (e.g. 1.8m)
  • Shock absorber type
  • Hook type: Snap hook or Scaffold hook
  • Material: Webbing or Rope
  • Single or twin-leg

Buying noteConfirm the required clearance height to ensure the lanyard and shock absorber will activate safely before a worker hits the ground.

03
Anchor Points

Fixed and Temporary Anchor Points

Secure points of attachment for the fall protection system. They can be permanently fixed to a structure or temporary and portable for specific tasks.

Typical applications

  • Roofing
  • Steel erection
  • Window cleaning
  • Permanent maintenance walkways

What to specify

  • Type: Fixed, Beam clamp, or Door anchor
  • Load rating
  • Material: Stainless steel or Galvanized
  • Mounting method
  • Compatibility

Buying noteAssess the structure the anchor will be attached to to ensure it can support the required fall arrest loads.

04
Self-Retracting Lifelines

SRLs and Fall Arrest Blocks

Devices that provide a retractable lifeline that locks automatically during a fall. They offer a shorter fall distance and more mobility than traditional lanyards.

Typical applications

  • Confined spaces
  • Vertical climbing
  • Loading bays
  • Overhead applications

What to specify

  • Line length
  • Line material: Webbing or Wire rope
  • Housing material
  • Braking mechanism
  • Weight

Buying noteSpecify the required length and whether the unit will be used vertically or horizontally (leading edge).

Selection guide

Selecting Fall Protection Gear

Equipment must be chosen based on the specific application and environment.

  1. 1

    Clearance Height

Ensure the fall distance is sufficient for the lanyard and shock absorber to deploy.

  2. 2

    Anchor Strength

Verify that the attachment point can withstand the forces generated by a fall.

  3. 3

    Equipment Compatibility

Ensure all components (harness, lanyard, anchor) are designed to work together.

  4. 4

    User Training

Fall protection is only effective if the user knows how to correctly wear and attach the gear.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about sourcing fall protection.

01What is a shock absorber in a lanyard for?

It dissipates the energy of a fall, reducing the impact force on the worker’s body to a safe level.

02Can I reuse a harness after it has arrested a fall?

No, any component that has been involved in a fall must be taken out of service and destroyed.

03What is the difference between fall restraint and fall arrest?

Restraint prevents you from reaching the edge; arrest stops you safely after you have already fallen.

04How often should harnesses be inspected?

They must be inspected by the user before every use and have a formal inspection by a competent person every 6 to 12 months.
