Supply & documentation

Every Methanol order is supplied with complete compliance documentation — Certificates of Analysis, invoices, packing lists and import records. We deliver to Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad, Multan, Sialkot, Hyderabad and industrial zones across Pakistan.

It started as “wood alcohol” — a crude byproduct of destructive wood distillation, first isolated by Robert Boyle in 1661. Today, Methanol is one of the most traded industrial chemicals on earth, with a global market valued at over USD 45 billion in 2025 and demand growing across every major end-use sector. From chemical feedstock to clean fuel, from pharmaceutical solvent to biodiesel production — methanol’s range of applications is genuinely difficult to overstate.

For Pakistan specifically, methanol matters across several critical industrial sectors. The country’s growing chemical manufacturing base, its pharmaceutical sector — one of the largest in South Asia — its expanding paints and coatings industry, and the energy sector’s increasing interest in alternative fuels all create sustained, recurring demand for this simple but extraordinarily useful molecule.

At AMZ Industries, we supply industrial and pharmaceutical-grade Methanol to manufacturers across Pakistan. This guide covers everything you need to know — the chemistry, how methanol is produced, the grades available, Pakistan-specific industrial applications, handling requirements, and what differentiates a responsible methanol supplier from an unreliable one.

What Is Methanol (CH₃OH)?

Methanol — also known as methyl alcohol or wood alcohol — is the simplest member of the alcohol family. Its molecular formula is CH₃OH: a single carbon atom bonded to three hydrogen atoms and one hydroxyl (OH) group. This deceptively simple structure gives methanol a combination of properties that makes it invaluable across dozens of industrial processes:

  • It is a polar solvent — dissolving both polar and many non-polar compounds, making it uniquely versatile
  • It is fully miscible with water and most organic solvents
  • It has a relatively low boiling point (64.7°C), making it easy to remove from solutions and process streams by evaporation
  • It is a highly reactive chemical feedstock — the hydroxyl and methyl groups participate in a wide range of industrial reactions
  • It is a clean-burning fuel with a higher octane number than petrol and lower carbon emissions than conventional fossil fuels

One important caution that every industrial buyer must understand: methanol is highly toxic. Unlike ethanol (drinkable alcohol), methanol is metabolised in the human body to formic acid and formaldehyde — compounds that cause irreversible damage to the optic nerve and central nervous system. Even small ingested quantities (10 mL) can cause permanent blindness; larger quantities are fatal. This is not a reason to avoid methanol in industrial applications — it is managed safely in industrial environments every day worldwide — but it does underscore the importance of proper labelling, storage separation from food and beverages, and PPE compliance.

The global methanol market was valued at USD 38.29 billion in 2024, with the fuel application segment alone projected to reach USD 22.0 billion by 2035, and the Asia-Pacific market generated approximately USD 19.7 billion in revenue in 2024, projected to reach USD 33.3 billion by 2030 at a CAGR of 9.4% — a trajectory that directly shapes the supply and pricing environment for Pakistani buyers.

How Is Methanol Manufactured?

The Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) / Catalytic Synthesis Route

The overwhelming majority of global methanol is produced via a two-step process: syngas production followed by catalytic methanol synthesis.

Step 1 — Syngas Production from Natural Gas:

Natural gas (predominantly methane, CH₄) is reformed with steam at high temperatures (700–1,000°C) in the presence of a nickel catalyst:

CH₄ + H₂O → CO + 3H₂ (Steam Methane Reforming)

This produces synthesis gas (syngas) — a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and hydrogen (H₂). The ratio of these components is adjusted through a water-gas shift reaction before methanol synthesis.

Step 2 — Catalytic Methanol Synthesis:

The syngas is passed over a copper-zinc oxide-alumina (Cu/ZnO/Al₂O₃) catalyst at moderate temperature (200–300°C) and pressure (50–100 bar):

CO + 2H₂ → CH₃OH

CO₂ + 3H₂ → CH₃OH + H₂O

The crude methanol leaving the reactor is purified by distillation to produce Grade AA methanol (the primary international commercial specification), with a purity of ≥99.85%.

Feedstock Routes Comparison

Natural gas-based methanol dominated the global market in 2024, accounting for the largest share due to lower carbon intensity, cost-effective production, and wide availability of natural gas in regions such as the Middle East, North America, and Russia.

FeedstockProduction RouteGlobal SharePakistan Context
Natural GasSteam Methane Reforming + Synthesis~57%Primary import source — Middle East
CoalCoal Gasification + Synthesis~37%China-sourced imports available
Biomass / RenewablesBiomass Gasification / CO₂ + H₂~6%Emerging globally; not yet commercially scaled in Pakistan

Pakistan does not have domestic methanol production at commercial scale, meaning the market is almost entirely import-dependent — primarily sourcing from Saudi Arabia, Iran, China, and other Middle Eastern and Asian producers. This makes supplier relationships and import logistics particularly critical for Pakistani buyers.

Commercial Grades and Specifications

Methanol is commercially available in a limited number of grades, but the differences between them matter significantly depending on your application.

GradePurityKey SpecificationTypical Application
Grade AA (Technical / Industrial)≥99.85% CH₃OHASTM D1152; water ≤0.1%, acetone ≤30 ppmChemical feedstock, fuel blending, LABSA/detergent production, paints, coatings, solvents
Fuel Grade≥99.5% CH₃OHLow water, sulphur <1 ppmBiodiesel production, fuel blending, direct methanol fuel cells
Pharmaceutical Grade (BP/USP)≥99.8% CH₃OHStrict limits on aldehydes, ketones, non-volatile residueAPI synthesis, chromatography, pharmaceutical solvents
HPLC Grade≥99.9% CH₃OHUltra-low UV absorbance, very low particulatesHPLC chromatography (labs and QC facilities)
Reagent / Lab Grade (ACS)≥99.8% CH₃OHACS specificationResearch, analytical chemistry, quality testing

For the majority of Pakistani industrial buyers — chemical manufacturers, detergent producers, paint formulators, and biodiesel producers — Grade AA industrial methanol is the standard specification. Pharmaceutical manufacturers require BP/USP grade with documented certificates of analysis.

Industrial Applications of Methanol in Pakistan

1. Chemical Feedstock — The Dominant Application

One of the primary industrial uses of methanol is as a feedstock in the production of chemicals like formaldehyde, acetic acid, and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). Formaldehyde, derived from methanol, is a key ingredient in resins, plastics, and adhesives. Acetic acid, another product of methanol, is used in the production of synthetic fibres, fabrics, and solvents.

In Pakistan’s chemical and manufacturing sector, methanol-derived compounds power a wide range of downstream production:

Derivative ChemicalProduction ProcessEnd-Use Industries in Pakistan
FormaldehydeOxidation of methanol over iron-molybdenum catalystWood panels, MDF boards, plywood adhesives, urea-formaldehyde resins
Acetic AcidMethanol carbonylation (Monsanto/Cativa process)Vinyl acetate, PET resin, solvents, food preservatives
MTBEReaction of methanol with isobutylenePetrol octane booster, fuel oxygenate (used by Pakistan’s refineries)
Dimethyl Ether (DME)Methanol dehydrationLPG substitute, clean diesel alternative
Methyl ChlorideReaction with HClSilicone production, methylating agent
Methyl Methacrylate (MMA)Multi-step synthesis from methanolAcrylic glass (Perspex), coatings, adhesives
ChloromethaneMethanol + HCl reactionSilicones, pharmaceuticals

2. Biodiesel Production

This is an application with significant and growing importance for Pakistan. Biodiesel — produced by the transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fats with methanol in the presence of an alkaline catalyst — has been identified by Pakistan’s government as a strategic fuel alternative to reduce dependence on imported petroleum diesel.

The reaction is chemically straightforward:

Triglyceride + 3 CH₃OH → 3 Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME = Biodiesel) + Glycerol

Methanol is consumed in an approximately 1:9 molar excess over the oil feedstock to drive the reaction to completion. This means that every tonne of biodiesel produced consumes approximately 100–110 kg of methanol. As Pakistan’s edible oil processing sector — particularly in Punjab and Sindh — begins to explore non-edible oil feedstocks (jatropha, waste cooking oil) for biodiesel, methanol demand from this application is set to grow.

3. Paints, Coatings, and Resins

The construction segment dominates global methanol market consumption with a share of 40.06% in 2026, driven by extensive use in producing formaldehyde-based resins, adhesives, and coatings — essential in the manufacturing of engineered wood, laminates, insulation foams, and protective paints.

Pakistan’s construction boom — driven by urban housing developments, infrastructure projects, and commercial real estate — is fuelling demand for:

  • Alkyd resins: Methanol is used as a chain-stopper in alkyd resin synthesis for solvent-based paints and varnishes
  • Urea-Formaldehyde (UF) resins: Used in wood panel adhesives (MDF, plywood, particle board)
  • Melamine-Formaldehyde resins: Used in decorative laminates, surface coatings, and tableware
  • Acrylic coatings: Methyl methacrylate (from methanol) is a monomer in acrylic coating systems

Pakistan’s major paint manufacturers — Berger Paints, ICI Paints (Akzo Nobel), and various local brands — rely on methanol-derived raw materials in formulations.

4. Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

Pakistan’s pharmaceutical sector, with over 700 licensed manufacturers and a growing API synthesis base, uses methanol extensively:

  • API synthesis: Methanol is a reaction solvent and reagent in the synthesis of numerous active pharmaceutical ingredients. Many drug molecules contain methyl groups added via methylation reactions using methanol or its derivatives
  • Chromatography: HPLC-grade methanol is consumed in enormous quantities by pharmaceutical QC laboratories for method development, dissolution testing, and drug assay by HPLC
  • Extraction and purification: Methanol is used to extract active compounds from plant material and to purify intermediates during synthesis
  • Tablet coating solutions: Methanol is used as a solvent in some film-coating formulations

For pharmaceutical-grade methanol, strict compliance with BP (British Pharmacopoeia) or USP (United States Pharmacopeia) specifications is required — including tight limits on aldehydes, ketones, and non-volatile residue.

5. Industrial Solvents and Cleaning

The solvent segment is estimated to be the fastest-growing end-use segment of the methanol market, and Pakistan’s industrial sector reflects this trend across multiple applications:

  • Ink and printing industry: Methanol is used as a solvent in flexographic and rotogravure printing inks, which are widely consumed by Pakistan’s large packaging printing sector
  • Adhesives: Solvent in contact adhesives and pressure-sensitive adhesive formulations
  • Electronics manufacturing: Cleaning agent for PCB assemblies and electronic components (though increasingly displaced by safer alternatives in regulated industries)
  • Laboratory solvent: Universal laboratory solvent for extraction, dissolution, HPLC mobile phase, and gravimetric analysis
  • General industrial cleaning: Degreasing agent for metal surfaces, tools, and equipment

6. Fuel and Energy Applications

Methanol is increasingly being recognized as a clean and sustainable energy source. It is used directly as a fuel in internal combustion engines or as a component in fuel blends. In addition, methanol serves as a raw material in the production of biodiesel, where it reacts with triglycerides to form fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), a type of biodiesel.

In Pakistan’s energy context:

  • Fuel blending: Methanol can be blended with petrol at low ratios (M5, M10 — 5% and 10% methanol) without engine modification. At higher blends (M85, M100), it requires dedicated flexible fuel vehicles
  • Racing fuel: Used as a high-octane racing fuel (octane number ~109) in motorsport applications
  • Marine fuel: Methanol is gaining traction globally as a low-emission alternative marine fuel
  • Antifreeze: Methanol-water mixtures are used as antifreeze agents in cooling systems, gas pipelines, and industrial equipment in cold climates

7. Agrochemicals

In agriculture, methanol is used as a pesticide and a solvent for herbicides. It is also employed in the production of biodiesel, which is increasingly being used to fuel agricultural machinery.

Pakistan’s large agricultural sector consumes methanol in:

  • Pesticide and herbicide formulation: Methanol is a solvent carrier in emulsifiable concentrate (EC) and soluble concentrate (SC) pesticide formulations
  • Fumigants: Methyl bromide (from methanol) has historically been used as a soil fumigant, though its use is being phased out under the Montreal Protocol
  • Crop protection chemicals: Methanol-derived solvents in various agrochemical formulations for fungicides, insecticides, and nematocides

Storage, Handling, and Safety

Methanol carries a dual hazard profile: it is highly flammable (flash point 11°C) AND acutely toxic (both by ingestion and inhalation). Both risks must be managed simultaneously.

Storage Requirements:

  • Store in stainless steel (316L), HDPE, or FRP (Fibre-Reinforced Plastic) tanks — methanol is compatible with most metals except certain aluminium alloys and reactive metals; avoid unlined mild steel for long-term storage
  • Storage areas must be explosion-proof (ATEX-rated electrical equipment) — methanol vapours are heavier than air and can accumulate at floor level, creating ignition risk
  • No sources of ignition within the storage area — no open flames, sparks, or non-explosion-proof electrical equipment
  • Store away from food, beverages, and any consumables — methanol must never be mistaken for ethanol
  • Keep containers tightly sealed — methanol is volatile (vapour pressure 127 mmHg at 20°C) and evaporates rapidly from open containers
  • Recommended storage temperature: below 30°C; away from direct sunlight
  • Bunding / secondary containment: Required for bulk tanks — capable of containing 110% of the largest vessel

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

TaskRequired PPE
General handlingChemical-resistant gloves (butyl or neoprene), safety glasses, lab coat
Bulk transfer / drummingFull face shield, chemical gloves, chemical-resistant apron, safety boots
Confined space or poor ventilationAir-supplied respirator (methanol vapour is not adequately warned by odour at dangerous concentrations)
Spill responseFull chemical suit, gloves, boots, air-supplied respirator
First Aid — skin contactWash immediately with soap and water; remove contaminated clothing
First Aid — eye contactFlush with water for 20 minutes; seek immediate medical attention
First Aid — ingestionMedical emergency — do NOT induce vomiting; call emergency services immediately; antidote is ethanol or fomepizole
First Aid — inhalationMove to fresh air immediately; seek medical attention if symptoms persist

Critical warning: Methanol fires burn with a nearly invisible blue flame — especially dangerous in daylight conditions. Never assume a methanol fire is extinguished based on visual inspection alone.

Why Source Methanol from AMZ Industries?

Methanol procurement requires more than a competitive price per litre. It requires a supplier who understands the dual-hazard nature of this chemical — flammable and toxic — and handles it accordingly. It requires proper ATEX-compliant storage, airtight containers that prevent evaporative loss during transport, and correct hazardous goods documentation for road transport in Pakistan.

It also requires grade integrity. Industrial-grade methanol used in a pharmaceutical application can introduce impurities that contaminate your API product and fail pharmacopoeial specification. Fuel-grade methanol used in an HPLC system will produce noisy baselines and unreliable results. Knowing which grade to supply for which application is part of what AMZ Industries brings to every order.

We supply Grade AA industrial methanol, fuel grade, and pharmaceutical/BP grade from trusted manufacturers, in 200L drums, IBC tanks (1,000L), and bulk tanker quantities, with nationwide delivery across Pakistan — Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan, Hyderabad, and beyond.
