What is Sodium Metabisulfite?
Sodium metabisulfite is a white crystalline powder used as a reducing agent, oxygen scavenger and preservative. In industry it is used to dechlorinate water ahead of reverse-osmosis membranes, as an antichlor in textile processing, and as a preservative in food and beverage manufacturing.

Free chlorine oxidises and permanently damages polyamide RO membranes. SMBS is dosed upstream to reduce residual chlorine to chloride, protecting the membrane from irreversible oxidation.
What is antichlor treatment in textile processing?
After hypochlorite bleaching, residual chlorine left in the fabric continues to attack the fibre and yellow the goods. An SMBS antichlor bath destroys that residual chlorine before the fabric moves on.
What handling precautions does SMBS require?
It releases sulphur dioxide gas on contact with acids or moisture, which is a respiratory irritant. Store it dry and sealed, keep it away from acids, and handle it with ventilation and eye protection.
Which grades are available?
Technical and food grades are both used industrially and differ in purity specification and documentation. Confirm the grade and any compliance paperwork you need in your RFQ.
