Overview

About earthing

Earthing gives fault current a safe path to ground so protective devices operate and exposed metalwork stays at a safe voltage. Lightning protection captures strikes and conducts them safely to earth.

Earthing design is site-specific: soil resistivity, fault level and the target earth resistance decide how many electrodes are needed and how they are arranged. Standards such as IEC 62305 (lightning protection) and BS 7430 (earthing) are commonly referenced in specifications.

The earthing we supply

Each line below explains what it is, where it is used, and what to include in your enquiry so we can quote accurately.

01
Earth Rods

Earth Rods for Electrode Systems

Earth rods are driven into the ground as electrodes. Copper-bonded steel rods combine strength for driving with copper’s corrosion resistance; solid copper and stainless rods are also used.

Typical applications

  • Substation earth grids
  • Equipment earthing
  • Lightning protection
  • Telecom earthing

What to specify

  • Material
  • Diameter, e.g. 5/8"
  • Length, e.g. 1.2–3 m
  • Copper bonding thickness
  • Couplers and driving heads

Buying noteState quantity, diameter, length and whether couplers for extension are needed.

02
Earthing Clamps

Earthing Clamps and Connectors

Clamps connect conductors to rods, tapes and structures. Joints are the weak points in an earthing system, so clamp material should be compatible with the rod and conductor.

Typical applications

  • Rod-to-cable connections
  • Tape joints
  • Structural bonding
  • Pipe bonding

What to specify

  • Type: rod, tape, cable
  • Rod or conductor size
  • Material: brass, copper, bronze
  • Bolted or exothermic

Buying noteMatch clamps to rod diameter and conductor size.

03
Lightning Arresters

Lightning Arresters and Surge Protection

In general usage the term covers both air terminals that intercept strikes on buildings and surge arresters that protect electrical equipment from overvoltage.

Surge arresters for distribution lines and transformers are rated by system voltage and discharge current; surge protective devices (SPDs) protect LV boards.

Typical applications

  • Building lightning protection
  • Transformer protection
  • LV board surge protection
  • Telecom towers

What to specify

  • Type: air terminal, surge arrester, SPD
  • System voltage
  • Discharge current
  • Mounting
  • Standard

Buying noteClarify which type is needed and the system voltage it protects.

04
Earth Pits

Earth Pits, Inspection Chambers and Enhancement Compound

Earth pits house the electrode connection for inspection and testing. Inspection covers protect the pit; earth enhancement compounds lower resistance in high-resistivity soil.

Typical applications

  • Industrial plant earthing
  • Transformers and generators
  • Lightning down-conductor termination

What to specify

  • Pit cover material
  • Pit size
  • Electrode type
  • Enhancement compound quantity

Buying noteSend the earthing design or required number of pits and electrode details.

05
Copper Tape

Copper Earthing Tape

Bare copper tape forms earth grids, down conductors and bonding conductors. It is specified by width × thickness, such as 25×3 mm, and supplied in coils.

Typical applications

  • Earth grids
  • Lightning down conductors
  • Equipment bonding
  • Earth bars

What to specify

  • Size, e.g. 25×3 mm
  • Bare or PVC-covered
  • Coil length
  • Copper grade

Buying noteGive size and total length; include fixings such as tape clips if needed.

Selection guide

Key Considerations for Earthing Materials

Earthing materials follow the earthing design.

  1. 1

    Soil and target resistance

These decide electrode count and enhancement.

  2. 2

    Material compatibility

Avoid mixing metals that corrode at joints.

  3. 3

    Testing access

Pits and test links allow periodic measurement.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about sourcing earthing.

01What earth resistance is required?

It depends on the system and specification. Your designer or client standard sets the target.

02Copper-bonded or solid copper rods?

Copper-bonded rods drive more easily; solid copper may be specified for corrosive soils. Follow your specification.
