Overview

About power distribution

Power distribution equipment steps voltage down, divides supply into circuits, measures it and improves its quality. In Pakistan, industrial consumers commonly take supply at 11 kV and transform it to 400 V for plant use, then distribute it through main and sub-distribution boards.

Instrument transformers (CTs and VTs) let meters and protection relays measure high currents and voltages safely. Capacitor banks correct lagging power factor caused by motors, which can reduce reactive charges on the electricity bill where the tariff applies them.

The power distribution we supply

Each line below explains what it is, where it is used, and what to include in your enquiry so we can quote accurately.

01
Distribution Boards

Distribution Boards for Final and Sub-Distribution

Distribution boards house MCBs or MCCBs and divide supply into protected circuits. Wall-mounted DBs serve lighting and small power; floor-standing sub-distribution boards serve process areas.

Ways, incomer rating, metal or insulated enclosure and IP rating are the main choices.

Typical applications

  • Lighting and small power
  • Floor and area sub-distribution
  • Workshop and utility supplies
  • Outdoor feeder pillars

What to specify

  • Number of ways
  • Single or three phase (TPN)
  • Incomer rating
  • Enclosure material
  • IP rating

Buying noteState ways, phases and incomer type, and whether the board is supplied empty or with breakers fitted.

02
Transformers

Power and Distribution Transformers

Distribution transformers step medium voltage, commonly 11 kV, down to 400 V. Oil-immersed units suit outdoor substations; dry-type (cast resin) units suit indoor installation near loads.

Rating in kVA, vector group, impedance, tap range and cooling are standard specification items. Control transformers for panels are a separate, much smaller category.

Typical applications

  • Plant substations
  • Commercial buildings
  • Isolation and control supplies
  • Generator step-up

What to specify

  • kVA rating
  • Voltage ratio, e.g. 11/0.415 kV
  • Vector group, e.g. Dyn11
  • Oil or dry type
  • Tap changer range

Buying noteInclude the utility’s requirements if the transformer is connected to the grid, as DISCOs may require specific approvals.

03
Current Transformers

Current Transformers (CT) for Metering and Protection

CTs produce a secondary current (1 A or 5 A) proportional to the primary current, for ammeters, energy meters and protection relays. Metering CTs are specified by accuracy class (for example 0.5 or 1), and protection CTs by class such as 5P10.

Typical applications

  • Panel metering
  • Energy monitoring
  • Protection relays
  • Capacitor bank control

What to specify

  • Ratio, e.g. 400/5 A
  • Accuracy class
  • Burden in VA
  • Type: ring, bar, split-core
  • Aperture or busbar size

Buying noteGive ratio, class, burden and the conductor or busbar it must fit around.

04
Voltage Transformers

Voltage Transformers (VT/PT) for Measurement

VTs scale medium voltage down to a standard secondary such as 110 V for meters and relays. They are used on MV panels and metering points.

Typical applications

  • MV metering
  • Protection relay voltage inputs
  • Synchronising
  • Utility metering points

What to specify

  • Primary and secondary voltage
  • Accuracy class
  • Burden
  • Single or double pole
  • Indoor or outdoor

Buying noteUtility metering VTs may need approved types; check with the utility before ordering.

Capacitor Banks

Capacitor Banks for Power Factor Correction

Capacitor banks supply reactive power locally to raise power factor. Automatic banks use a power factor controller to switch capacitor steps through capacitor-duty contactors.

Where drives and other non-linear loads create harmonics, detuned banks with reactors are often specified to avoid resonance.

Typical applications

  • Main LV boards
  • Motor-heavy plants
  • Textile and cement facilities
  • Commercial buildings

What to specify

  • Total kVAR and steps
  • Voltage rating
  • Fixed or automatic
  • Detuned reactor percentage
  • Controller type

Buying noteSend recent electricity bills or load data and harmonic information if available; the bank should be sized from them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about sourcing power distribution.

01Will a capacitor bank reduce my bill?

It can reduce reactive or low power factor charges where your tariff applies them. A correctly sized bank depends on your load.

02Oil or dry-type transformer?

Oil types are common outdoors; dry types suit indoor locations near loads. Your design and site decide.
