Overview

About instrumentation

Instrumentation is how a plant knows what is happening inside pipes, tanks and machines. Transmitters convert a process variable into a standard signal, most often 4–20 mA, sometimes with HART or a fieldbus, that a PLC or DCS reads.

Instruments are specified around the process: range, medium, temperature, pressure, process connection, wetted materials and accuracy. Getting any of these wrong can mean a meter that cannot be fitted or fails early.

The instrumentation we supply

Each line below explains what it is, where it is used, and what to include in your enquiry so we can quote accurately.

01
Pressure Transmitters

Pressure Transmitters for Process Measurement

Pressure transmitters measure gauge, absolute or differential pressure. Differential types are also used to infer flow and level.

Typical applications

  • Pump discharge pressure
  • Steam and air systems
  • Filter differential pressure
  • Tank level by hydrostatic pressure

What to specify

  • Range and type: gauge, absolute, DP
  • Output: 4–20 mA, HART
  • Process connection, e.g. ½" NPT
  • Wetted material
  • Accuracy

Buying noteGive the normal and maximum pressure, medium and process connection.

02
Temperature Sensors

Temperature Sensors: RTDs, Thermocouples and Transmitters

RTDs (typically Pt100) offer accuracy at moderate temperatures; thermocouples (such as Type K) cover higher temperatures. Thermowells protect the sensor in the process.

Typical applications

  • Boilers and furnaces
  • Process tanks
  • Motor and bearing temperature
  • HVAC

What to specify

  • Sensor type: Pt100 or thermocouple
  • Range
  • Probe length and diameter
  • Thermowell and connection
  • Transmitter output

Buying noteState insertion length, process connection and whether a thermowell is required.

03
Flow Meters

Flow Meters for Liquids, Gases and Steam

Electromagnetic meters suit conductive liquids such as water; vortex meters suit steam and gases; ultrasonic and Coriolis meters cover other duties. The medium decides the technology.

Typical applications

  • Water and effluent
  • Steam distribution
  • Compressed air
  • Chemical dosing

What to specify

  • Technology
  • Line size
  • Flow range
  • Process connection
  • Output and display

Buying noteSend medium, line size, flow range, pressure and temperature.

04
Level Sensors

Level Sensors and Switches for Tanks and Silos

Level is measured continuously with radar, ultrasonic or hydrostatic transmitters, or detected at a point with float, vibrating or capacitive switches.

Typical applications

  • Water tanks
  • Chemical storage
  • Cement and grain silos
  • Sumps

What to specify

  • Continuous or point
  • Technology
  • Range
  • Medium: liquid or solid
  • Mounting

Buying noteDescribe the tank, medium and whether foam, dust or agitation is present.

Enquire about level sensors
05
Digital Meters

Digital Panel Meters and Energy Meters

Digital meters display voltage, current, power and energy, often with Modbus communication for energy monitoring systems.

Typical applications

  • Panel metering
  • Energy monitoring
  • Process indication
  • Sub-metering

What to specify

  • Parameters measured
  • CT and VT inputs
  • Accuracy class
  • Communication
  • Cutout size, e.g. 96×96 mm

Buying noteConfirm CT secondary (1 A or 5 A), communication and panel cutout.

How to Specify Process Instruments

An instrument datasheet is ideal. Without one, provide these.

  1. 1

    Process conditions

Medium, normal and maximum pressure and temperature.

  2. 2

    Range and accuracy

The measurement span and accuracy needed.

  3. 3

    Connection and materials

Process connection and wetted parts compatible with the medium.

  4. 4

    Signal

Output and protocol the control system expects.
