About industrial automation

Industrial automation turns a set of machines into a controlled process. Sensors measure what is happening, a PLC decides what to do, drives control motor speed and position, and an HMI lets operators see and adjust the process.

Automation components are rarely interchangeable across brands. A PLC module must match its rack and firmware family, an HMI must speak the PLC’s protocol, and a replacement drive must match motor power, voltage and control wiring. For that reason most automation purchasing in Pakistan is part-number driven, especially for maintenance spares.

For new projects, selection starts from I/O count, communication networks (for example Profinet, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP or RS-485), motor list and environment, then fixes a platform that the plant can support long term.

The industrial automation we supply

Each line below explains what it is, where it is used, and what to include in your enquiry so we can quote accurately.

01
PLC

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) for Machine and Process Control

A PLC reads inputs from sensors and switches, executes a control program and drives outputs such as contactors, valves and drives. Compact PLCs suit single machines; modular PLCs with rack-mounted I/O suit larger lines and processes.

Ordering a PLC system means ordering a CPU, power supply, digital and analogue I/O modules and communication modules from the same family.

Typical applications

  • Packaging and filling machines
  • Conveyor and material handling
  • Batching and mixing
  • Utilities such as boilers and pumps

What to specify

  • CPU model and memory
  • Digital and analogue I/O count
  • Communication ports and protocols
  • Supply voltage, e.g. 24 V DC
  • Expansion capability

Buying noteFor spares, send the exact part number from the module label. For new systems, send the I/O list and network requirements.

HMI

Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) for Operator Monitoring

HMIs are touch panels that display process status, alarms and trends and let operators enter setpoints. They connect to PLCs over Ethernet or serial links.

Screen size, resolution and protocol support are the main choices; front IP rating matters for washdown and dusty areas.

Typical applications

  • Machine operator panels
  • Process monitoring stations
  • Alarm and recipe management
  • Retrofits of old text displays

What to specify

  • Screen size, e.g. 4–15 inch
  • Communication: Ethernet, RS-485
  • Supported PLC drivers
  • Front IP rating
  • Supply voltage

Buying noteConfirm the PLC it must talk to and the panel cutout size if you are replacing an existing unit.

VFD

Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) for Motor Speed Control

VFDs control AC motor speed by varying output frequency and voltage. They cut energy use on pumps and fans, provide soft starting and allow precise process speed control.

Drives are rated by motor power and current at a given supply voltage, with normal-duty and heavy-duty ratings for different load types. Long motor cables may need output filters, and many sites add line reactors to limit harmonics.

Typical applications

  • Pumps and fans
  • Conveyors and mixers
  • Textile machinery
  • Compressors

What to specify

  • Motor power kW and current
  • Supply: 1-ph 230 V or 3-ph 400 V
  • Normal or heavy duty
  • Built-in braking and filters
  • Fieldbus options

Buying noteGive motor nameplate data and load type. Heavy-duty applications such as conveyors and crushers often need a larger drive than the motor kW suggests.

Servo Drives

Servo Drives and Motors for Precise Motion

Servo systems control position, speed and torque with closed-loop feedback from an encoder. They are used where a VFD cannot achieve the accuracy or dynamic response required.

Servo drives and motors are normally matched within one brand and series, along with the feedback and power cables.

Typical applications

  • Cut-to-length and printing
  • Pick-and-place and robotics
  • Indexing tables
  • Packaging machinery

What to specify

  • Rated power and torque
  • Encoder type and resolution
  • Control: pulse, analogue or fieldbus
  • Supply voltage
  • Matched motor and cables

Buying noteQuote drive and motor together with cable lengths. For replacements, send both nameplates.

05
Sensors

Industrial Sensors for Detection and Feedback

Proximity, photoelectric, ultrasonic and limit sensors tell the control system where products and machine parts are. Inductive sensors detect metal; capacitive sensors detect non-metallic material; photoelectric sensors detect objects at a distance.

Output type (PNP or NPN, NO or NC) must match the PLC input card, and connection type (cable or M12 connector) should match the installation.

Typical applications

  • Product detection on conveyors
  • Position and end-of-travel
  • Level detection in hoppers
  • Safety guarding inputs

What to specify

  • Sensing type and range
  • Output: PNP/NPN, NO/NC
  • Housing size, e.g. M12, M18
  • Connection: cable or M12
  • IP rating

Buying notePNP versus NPN is the most frequent mismatch. Check the PLC input type before ordering.

Selection guide

How to Choose Industrial Automation Components

Automation purchasing is safest when compatibility is confirmed first.

  1. 1

    Existing platform

Stay with the plant’s PLC family where possible to reuse programs, spares and skills.

  2. 2

    Exact part numbers

For spares, the label part number is the specification.

  3. 3

    Networks

Confirm protocols between PLC, HMI, drives and remote I/O.

  4. 4

    Motor data

Drives are sized from motor nameplate and load type.

  5. 5

    Environment

Temperature, dust and humidity affect enclosure and cooling.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about sourcing industrial automation.

01Can you source discontinued PLC modules?

Send the part number; we check availability and, if needed, let you know what the manufacturer lists as a successor for your engineer to approve.

02Do you program PLCs?

This page covers component supply. Tell us what you need and we will confirm what we can support.

03Should I choose a VFD or soft starter?

A soft starter reduces starting current only; a VFD also controls running speed. The process requirement decides.
