1 / overview

What is caustic soda?

Caustic soda, scientifically known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is a white inorganic compound that dissolves readily in water to form a strongly alkaline solution. It is also commonly known as lye or soda lye.

The term “caustic” reflects its intensely corrosive nature. At high concentrations, sodium hydroxide can cause severe burns to skin, eyes, and other exposed tissue. That same reactivity, however, is what makes it one of the most widely used chemicals in modern industry.

In Pakistan, caustic soda is essential across textiles, soap and detergent manufacturing, water treatment, paper and pulp, chemical production, edible oil refining, rayon and viscose processing, food-grade lye applications, and pharmaceuticals.

Why it matters: sodium hydroxide is a foundational industrial alkali used whenever strong alkalinity, pH correction, chemical conversion, or heavy-duty cleaning performance is required.

How caustic soda is made

Nearly all commercial caustic soda is produced through the chloralkali process, where sodium chloride solution (brine) is electrolysed to generate sodium hydroxide, chlorine, and hydrogen.

This older method uses a mercury cathode and produces high-purity sodium hydroxide, but it is being phased out globally because of mercury-related environmental risks.
This method uses an asbestos or polymer diaphragm and has historically offered lower energy cost, but it is also declining as cleaner and more efficient technologies replace it.
This is the current industry standard in Pakistan and globally. It uses an ion-exchange membrane, produces caustic soda at roughly 30–33% concentration before concentration to 50%, and avoids mercury waste while offering better energy efficiency.
Production method Description Status
Mercury cell Uses mercury cathode and produces high-purity NaOH Being phased out globally
Diaphragm cell Uses asbestos or polymer diaphragm; lower energy cost Still in use but declining
Membrane cell Uses ion-exchange membrane; efficient and environmentally preferred Current industry standard in Pakistan and globally

Industrial applications in Pakistan

Textile industry

Used in mercerization, scouring, dyeing, and finishing. High-purity flake caustic soda is widely used in Pakistan’s textile export sector.

Soap & detergent

Essential for saponification of fats and oils, pH adjustment, surfactant production, and sodium silicate manufacture.

Water treatment

Used for pH correction, heavy metal precipitation, corrosion control, and industrial effluent treatment.

Paper & pulp

Supports Kraft pulping, de-inking, bleaching, and recycled paper processing operations.

Chemical manufacturing

Acts as a raw material in bleach, sodium phenolate, epoxy intermediates, polycarbonates, acids, and solvent-related chemistry.

Pharmaceuticals

Used for pH control, regulated synthesis, and selected active and excipient manufacturing processes.

Food processing

Food-grade lye is used in curing olives, pretzels, noodles, and selected controlled food-processing applications.

Vegetable oil & ghee

Used in refining steps to neutralize free fatty acids and support edible oil processing.

Other industrial uses

Also used in oil and gas, rayon and viscose manufacture, synthetic rubber processing, and other alkaline industrial operations.

Textile note: for mercerization and high-quality dyeing, buyers typically prefer high-purity flake material with minimal iron and sodium carbonate contamination to avoid effects on colour performance.

Storage, handling & safety

Storage guidance

  1. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area
  2. Keep flakes and pearls away from moisture because they are hygroscopic
  3. Use sealed polyethylene or suitable carbon steel containers
  4. Avoid aluminium, zinc, and tin due to reactive hydrogen-gas generation
  5. Maintain storage temperatures below 40°C where possible
  6. Keep product segregated from incompatible acids and reactive materials

Handling precautions

  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves, goggles, face shield, and protective clothing
  • When diluting, always add NaOH to water — never water to NaOH
  • Control the heat generated during dilution and transfer
  • Maintain eyewash stations and emergency showers close to work areas
Primary hazard: caustic soda is a Class 8 corrosive. Even short contact with concentrated product can cause severe chemical burns, especially during mixing and transfer.
9 / FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Flakes are high-purity solid sodium hydroxide, often used where storage, transport, or batch dosing is preferred. Liquid soda lye is typically supplied at 31% or 50% concentration for continuous industrial dosing.
For many Pakistani industrial buyers, the most common forms are 99% flakes in bags and 50% liquid caustic soda for larger continuous-use systems.
It is essential for mercerization, scouring, pH control, and dye fixation, all of which directly affect fabric appearance, strength, and processing consistency.
Always add sodium hydroxide to water slowly while controlling heat. Never add water directly onto concentrated NaOH because the exothermic reaction can cause dangerous splashing.
Yes, product form selection, concentration guidance, and commercial supply support can be provided for buyers who need help choosing the right caustic soda grade for their process.
