1 / overview

What Is Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)?

Isopropyl Alcohol, also known as isopropanol, 2-propanol, or sec-propyl alcohol, is a secondary alcohol with the chemical formula C₃H₈O. It is the simplest secondary alcohol and one of the most important industrial alcohols used globally after methanol and ethanol.

What makes IPA especially valuable is the combination of rapid evaporation, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, excellent solvency, and compatibility with water and many organic systems. It dissolves oils, resins, adhesives, waxes, and biological residues, while also evaporating quickly and leaving surfaces dry and streak-free.

In Pakistan, IPA quietly underpins quality, cleanliness, and safety across pharmaceutical manufacturing, hospitals, electronics assembly, cosmetics, labs, paints, and industrial cleaning operations.

Key value: IPA is one of the most versatile industrial solvents available because it combines cleaning power, residue-free evaporation, and trusted disinfectant performance.

How Isopropyl Alcohol is manufactured

In the traditional indirect hydration route, propylene reacts with sulphuric acid to form propyl sulphate esters, which are then hydrolysed with water to yield IPA. This method is older and generates sulphuric acid waste that requires treatment.
This is the modern industry-standard route. Propylene reacts directly with water vapour in the presence of an acidic catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure. It is cleaner, continuous, and produces IPA without acid waste. The crude product is then purified by distillation to the required concentration and grade.
In this route, acetone is catalytically hydrogenated to IPA. It is especially relevant for high-purity specialty grades and can produce very pure IPA suitable for pharmaceutical and electronics-grade use.
Route Raw Materials By-products Product Purity Pakistan Context
Indirect Hydration Propylene + H₂SO₄ Sulphuric acid waste Industrial grade Declining, older technology
Direct Hydration Propylene + H₂O Minimal Industrial to pharma Primary import source
Acetone Hydrogenation Acetone + H₂ None High purity Specialty imports
Pakistan has no significant domestic IPA production, so the market is largely import-dependent, sourcing mainly from China, India, South Korea, and the Middle East.

A key point for Pakistani buyers: 70% IPA is more effective for disinfection than 99% IPA because the water content improves contact time and penetration during microbial kill.

Industrial applications of IPA in Pakistan

Pharmaceutical manufacturing

IPA is used in GMP clean rooms for surface disinfection, equipment sanitation, API synthesis, recrystallisation, azeotropic drying, and QC lab work including HPLC and analytical procedures.

Healthcare and hospitals

70% IPA is used for pre-injection skin antisepsis, non-sterile medical device cleaning, surgical preparation, ward disinfection, ICU equipment wipe-downs, and routine infection control.

Electronics manufacturing

IPA removes flux residues from PCBs, cleans connectors and contacts, wipes optical lenses and screens, and supports residue-free cleaning of sensors and precision instruments.

Paints, coatings, and resins

Used as a solvent in coatings, a thinner and retarder in paint systems, a cleaner for spray guns and equipment, and a surface-prep degreaser before coating application.

Personal care and cosmetics

IPA is used in hand sanitisers, antiseptic solutions, perfumes, aftershaves, toners, nail products, and hair care formulations as a carrier solvent and active sanitizing component.

Industrial cleaning and degreasing

Effective for removing oils, greases, adhesive residues, inks, resin residues, proteins, and general contamination from metal parts, tools, optical surfaces, and equipment.

Laboratory and research use

IPA is used in HPLC mobile phases, sample preparation, extraction work, analytical cleaning, and routine laboratory maintenance across research and QC environments.

Textile industry

Used in stain removal, spot cleaning, certain dye solvent systems, degreasing of machinery, and screen printing cleanup in finishing and processing units.

General manufacturing

Across multiple sectors, IPA supports fast-drying cleaning, sanitation, formulation work, and solvent recovery processes where low residue and process cleanliness matter.

6 / concentration logic

IPA concentration and disinfection efficacy

One of the most misunderstood points about IPA is that higher concentration does not always mean better disinfection. For antimicrobial use, 60–80% IPA performs better than pure or near-pure IPA because it provides the right balance of penetration, evaporation rate, and contact time.

IPA ConcentrationAntimicrobial EfficacyNotes
50% IPAModerateBelow optimal, slower kill rate
60–70% IPAOptimal for disinfectionBest balance of penetration and contact time
70–80% IPAExcellentStandard hospital and pharmaceutical range
90–99% IPAReduced disinfection efficacyRapid evaporation reduces contact time
Pure anhydrous IPALowest disinfection efficacyNot recommended for antimicrobial use
For cleaning and solvent applications where disinfection is not the objective, higher concentrations such as 99% IPA are preferred because they offer stronger solvent performance and introduce less water into the process.

Storage, handling, and safety

Storage requirements

  1. Store in stainless steel, HDPE, or aluminium containers
  2. Use explosion-proof storage areas and electrical systems
  3. Keep away from flames, sparks, and ignition sources
  4. Store below 25°C and out of direct sunlight
  5. Keep containers tightly sealed to reduce evaporation loss
  6. Bond and ground metal containers during transfer
  7. Use secondary containment for bulk storage

PPE and first aid

  • General handling: nitrile gloves and safety glasses
  • Bulk transfer: face shield, gloves, apron
  • Poor ventilation: organic vapour respirator
  • Spill response: chemical suit, gloves, boots, respirator
  • Skin contact: wash with soap and water
  • Eye contact: flush with water for 15 minutes
  • Inhalation: move to fresh air
  • Ingestion: do not induce vomiting, seek medical attention
IPA is a highly flammable liquid with a flash point of 11.7°C. It must be handled with the same level of fire safety discipline used for other low-flash-point industrial solvents.
8 / sourcing advantage

Why source IPA from AMZ Industries?

Clearly differentiated grades

We supply industrial or technical grade, pharmaceutical grade, and food-grade IPA based on application needs rather than one generic specification for all industries.

Concentration integrity

IPA grade and concentration directly affect disinfectant validation, solvent efficiency, and cleaning results. Supply quality matters at every stage.

Suitable packaging options

Available in 1L, 5L, 20L, 25L, 200L drums, and 1,000L IBC tanks for both smaller operational use and bulk industrial requirements.

Storage-conscious supply

IPA is volatile and flammable, so compliant sealed storage and handling are essential to maintain product performance during distribution.

Nationwide delivery

We support supply across Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Multan, Rawalpindi, and other industrial markets across Pakistan.

Application-based support

Whether you need 70% ready-to-use disinfectant IPA or 99% concentrate for solvent and cleaning applications, we help match the right option to the right use.

IPA is one of those chemicals where wrong grade, wrong storage, or wrong concentration has an immediate impact on audit readiness, cleaning performance, and process reliability.
