How Methanol is manufactured

The majority of global methanol is produced through steam methane reforming. Natural gas, predominantly methane, is reformed with steam at high temperatures in the presence of a nickel catalyst to produce synthesis gas, or syngas, a mixture of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen.
The syngas is passed over a copper-zinc oxide-alumina catalyst at moderate temperature and pressure. Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide react with hydrogen to form methanol, which is then purified by distillation to produce Grade AA methanol with purity of at least 99.85%.
Natural gas-based methanol dominates the global market and remains the primary import source for Pakistan, particularly from the Middle East. Coal-based methanol is also available through China-sourced imports, while biomass and renewable routes remain emerging and are not yet commercially scaled in Pakistan.
