Overview

About switchgear

Low-voltage switchgear protects and switches electrical circuits. Circuit breakers (MCB, MCCB and ACB) interrupt overloads and short circuits; contactors switch motors and loads on command; overload relays protect motors against sustained overcurrent. Together they form the core of every distribution board and motor control centre.

Selection is governed by a few numbers: rated current (In), rated voltage, number of poles, and breaking capacity (for example Icu and Ics for breakers under IEC 60947-2). Breaking capacity must be at least the prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation, which is why the same 100 A rating can call for very different breakers in different parts of a plant.

Where breakers are coordinated, downstream devices trip before upstream ones, and contactors and overload relays are matched to motor ratings. Mixing brands or series within a coordinated scheme should be checked with the panel designer.

The switchgear we supply

Each line below explains what it is, where it is used, and what to include in your enquiry so we can quote accurately.

01
MCB

Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB) for Final Circuits

MCBs protect final circuits such as lighting, sockets and small control supplies, typically up to about 125 A. They combine thermal overload and magnetic short-circuit tripping in a DIN-rail module.

Trip curves define how fast the magnetic element operates: B curve for resistive loads, C curve for general and lighting loads, D curve for high inrush loads such as transformers and small motors.

Typical applications

  • Lighting and small power circuits
  • Control power supplies
  • Distribution board final circuits
  • Small single-phase loads

What to specify

  • Rated current, e.g. 6–63 A
  • Poles: 1P, 2P, 3P, 4P
  • Curve: B, C or D
  • Breaking capacity, e.g. 6 kA or 10 kA
  • DIN rail mounting

Buying noteGive current, poles, curve and kA rating. If you are replacing existing breakers, the series matters for busbar and accessory compatibility.

02
MCCB

Moulded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB) for Feeders and Incomers

MCCBs cover the middle ground, commonly from around 16 A up to 1600 A, protecting feeders, sub-main incomers and large motor circuits. Many offer adjustable thermal and magnetic settings, and electronic trip units add more precise protection and metering.

Accessories such as shunt trips, undervoltage releases, auxiliary contacts and motor operators are often required by the panel design and should be listed with the breaker.

Typical applications

  • Sub-main and feeder protection
  • Panel incomers
  • Large motor circuits
  • Generator and changeover schemes

What to specify

  • Frame size and rated current
  • Breaking capacity Icu/Ics
  • Trip unit: thermal-magnetic or electronic
  • Poles: 3P or 4P
  • Accessories: shunt, UVR, aux, motor operator

Buying noteFrame size, setting range and breaking capacity are all needed. List accessories on the same line so the breaker is supplied complete.

ACB

Air Circuit Breakers (ACB) for Main LV Incomers

ACBs are used as main incomers and bus couplers on LV main distribution boards, typically from around 630 A to 6300 A. They interrupt fault current in air and are often drawout, so they can be isolated and removed for maintenance.

Electronic protection units provide long-time, short-time, instantaneous and earth-fault settings, which allows discrimination with downstream MCCBs.

Typical applications

  • Transformer LV incomers
  • Bus couplers
  • Generator incomers
  • Main distribution boards

What to specify

  • Rated current, e.g. 800–4000 A
  • Breaking capacity at 415 V
  • Fixed or drawout
  • Protection unit functions
  • Motorised and control voltage

Buying noteConfirm fixed or drawout, protection functions and control voltage for motor charging and closing coils, as these vary by order.

Contactors

Contactors for Motor Control and Load Switching

Contactors are electrically operated switches that start and stop motors, heaters, capacitor banks and lighting loads. A coil, energised by the control circuit, closes the main contacts.

Contactors are rated by utilisation category: AC-3 for squirrel-cage motor starting and stopping, AC-1 for resistive loads. Star-delta and reversing starters use combinations of contactors with mechanical interlocks.

Typical applications

  • DOL, star-delta and reversing starters
  • Heater and furnace switching
  • Capacitor bank switching
  • Lighting contactor panels

What to specify

  • AC-3 rating in kW or A
  • Coil voltage AC or DC
  • Auxiliary contacts
  • Poles: 3P or 4P
  • Mounting: DIN or screw

Buying noteCoil voltage is the most common error on orders, so confirm it, for example 230 V AC or 24 V DC, along with the AC-3 rating at your motor voltage.

Overload Relays

Thermal and Electronic Overload Relays for Motor Protection

Overload relays protect motors against sustained overcurrent and, in many models, phase loss. They are mounted directly on or near a contactor and trip the contactor coil circuit.

Thermal overloads use bimetal elements with an adjustable range; electronic overloads offer wider ranges, better accuracy and options like trip class selection for heavy-starting loads.

Typical applications

  • Pump and fan motors
  • Conveyor and crusher drives
  • Compressor motors
  • MCC starter buckets

What to specify

  • Setting range in A
  • Trip class, e.g. 10 or 20
  • Thermal or electronic
  • Phase-loss sensitivity
  • Contactor compatibility

Buying noteChoose the setting range around the motor’s full-load current, and confirm it mounts to the contactor series in use.

Selection guide

Key Considerations When Selecting Switchgear

Switchgear is selected from the single-line diagram. These details let us quote the right device.

  1. 1

    Prospective fault level

Breaking capacity must meet or exceed the fault current at that board.

  2. 2

    Rated current and poles

Match the circuit, and confirm 3P or 4P for neutral switching.

  3. 3

    Trip characteristics

Curve, adjustable settings or electronic functions as the design requires.

  4. 4

    Series compatibility

For extensions to existing panels, the same series keeps busbars and accessories compatible.

  5. 5

    Control voltages

Coil and accessory voltages for contactors, shunt trips and motor operators.
